Another time, a victim was photographed fishing outdoors with her abuser. Cole and his fellow agents consulted with scientists, who studied the trees and fish in the picture and helped them narrow down the location to Minnesota. When they showed the background of the photo to people who worked in the parks and recreation industry there, they were able to pinpoint the exact location where the crime had occurred—information that resulted in her rescue.

Other useful clues that turn up in pictures include logos on clothing, identifiable cars, and building numbers. Once, agents viewed a disturbing video of a child being abused and noticed a bag of pretzels visible in one frame. Because the brand of pretzels was sold only in a certain region, the sharp-eyed agents had gained a valuable clue!
